Giddy Up for Skijoring
Feb 14, 2013
A stampede of skijoring teams will ride again on Blair Street this weekend, Feb. 16-17 in the fourth annual Silverton Skijoring Festival. And this year they’ll be competing for even more prize money. Organizer Pete Maisel said he expects bigger crowds, along with plenty of horses and skiers. He expects about 20 teams to compete. And the purse for winners this year is likely to be between $4,000 and $5,000. “That rivals Leadville, by the way,” said Maisel, referring to the popular skijoring event there. “”I’m proud of that.”

Zip Line to Rip Down Arastra Gulch

Picture
Feb. 14, 2013
A mile-long zip line could send people flying down Arastra Gulch to the Mayflower Mill this summer, providing a significant new tourist attraction. Cameron Winters, owner of the Full Blast Adventures Zip Line on U.S. 160 near Durango, is near a deal with the San Juan County Historical Society to use the old Mayflower Tram and its easement for the project. Winters said the zip line will include the longest span in Colorado — 2,058 feet.
