Elevation
San Juan County has a total area of 388.29 square miles (1,005.7 km2), of which 387.42 square miles (or 99.78%) is land and 0.86 square miles (or 0.22%) is water. It has the highest mean elevation of any county in the United States, at 11,240 feet. Silverton sits at 9,318 feet.

Schools
The Silverton School is a small public school located in Silverton, Colorado, in the heart of the San Juan mountain range. The school has approximately 60 students in grades K-12 and is housed in an historic 3 story red brick building that just underwent an $11 million renovation.  In 2002, the Silverton School joined a network of 115 Expeditionary Learning schools across the country.  This national model works well with our school's setting, small class sizes, and overall goals for academic excellence.  For more information regarding Expeditionary Learning in the Silverton school, click here.

The Silverton Family Learning Center, is a child development center licensed by the Colorado Department of Health Services. The mission of the center is to provide a safe, secure and stimulating environment wherein each child may experience success, thus developing a sense of self-worth.  Within this creative environment, they provide the highest quality care and education for Silverton's preschool children.

Silverton, CO climate is cool during summer when temperatures tend to be in the 60's and extremely cold during winter when temperatures tend to be in the -10's.   Temperature variations between night and day tend to be relatively big during summer with a difference that can reach 33 degrees Fahrenheit, and relatively big during winter with an average difference of 36 degrees Fahrenheit.  The annual average precipitation at Silverton is 25.17 Inches. Rainfall in is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. The wettest month of the year is August with an average rainfall of 3.08 Inches.
